1997 Saturn SC1 Shifting problems

Just bought a 1997 SC1. The shifter occassionally sticks going into first, and sometimes in 2nd during downshifting. The last owner said he's had the problem for 3 years. Recently changed the clutch and it got a little better. If you double clutch it engages OK. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't want to have to put a new transmission in

Well, if you mean it grinds when shifting into 1st and down shifting fron 2nd to 1st, it is probably a worn out 1st gear syncro. It could also be worn shifter bushings, both repairs require removing and disassembling the transmission.
