About the Alternator

Hi my car is a Saturn SL2 twincam 1.9 year 1997, it has 189.923 mil, this car used to be working fine, but then all of sudden it wont work anymore, when I put the key on da ignition and try to start it, it wont do it, it's dead, I thought it was the battery so I got a new one, it started but the Battery shaped light on my panel went on adn it on and off went I hit da gas or I stopped then at the next day I tryed to start my car again and it was dead, what do you think it might be? I dont understand nothing abuot car, a friend told me it could be the alternator but I wanted a professional answer so if you guys could help me it would be awesome!
