Ridiculously loud exhaust

First my VSC, check engine, and trac off lights came on. Got it hooked up to a computer, they said new gas cap. So I did. The lights went off. Next morning, I crank the car and it’s terribly loud, sounds like an angry lawn mower. All lights come back on. Scared to drive it to the shop at this point. Any idea what this could be? People have told me O2 sensor, catalytic converter, or donut gasket.

Hello, I'm Danny.

The traction control and check engine light are two separate issues. First you need to have the exhaust leak fixed. Since there is a major leak in the system that is probably why the check engine light came on. Having a major leak like that will trigger the check engine light due to false readings by the oxygen sensors. Yes, It could be a donut/exhaust gasket, broken exhaust pipe connection, hole in catalytic converter/muffler,etc. Any reputable exhaust/muffler shop can and will usually give you a free estimate. After having the exhaust leak fixed you will need to have the check engine and traction control codes read. If you don't have access to a code reader/scanner your local auto parts stores have a tool loaner program can rent you one.Stores like AutoZone will check the codes for free. Here is a tutorial showing you what is involved:

After you have the leak fixed and code(s) read please get back to us with the code numbers and we can properly diagnose the problem. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

I’ve found a shop near me that is going to see what the problem is. The shop is about two miles from my house, is it safe to just drive the car there?

Hello again.
You should be fine with 2 miles. After you get the leak fixed we'll go from there. Ask them if they have a code reader/scanner to check the codes as an added bonus. Worth a try!
Hope to hear back from you soon. Thanks again for using 2CarPros.
