So last Saturday as I was leaving my house on a snow/ice covered road, A truck comes around the corner faster than he should of been. I swerve to miss him. Ended up catching too much snow that had been plowed onto the side of the road. I got caught and it basically dragged me into the ditch. Took an hour and the help of like 6 people to push me out. That aside since then, The reverse gear on my 5 speed manual has been giving me fits. It grinds(getting worse) and sometimes won't move the vehicle. If it does move the vehicle it makes a popping noise. If I don't hold the Stick down it will pop out of gear. I'm really hoping I don't have to replace the Transmission over a Reverse gear. The rest of the gears work fine. No problems in any gear, or engaging in 1st or anything. I have done a little research and have noticed this happens a lot in this make/model and cars around the same year as my own. How would I Troubleshoot this? What are some of my options? Can I change just the Reverse Gear instead of having to buy a new transmission? I am handy(with instruction) have access to a shop and a number of tools. Any links, guides or tips would be extremely helpful, I don't think i'll be able to find pull through parking spots or keep myself from having to reverse much longer.
