Rev limiter

That's the general purpose of the rev limiter. But I cannot say this for sure because I can't see or hear your engine running. When I was on the technician review panel for Ford we toured the powertrain plant and got to see how they test engines and transmissions, which was an eye opener because they had several engines being taken to redline then to idle over and over by a machine for several days! So my guess is that if it sounds like it did before, you're probably good.

The rev limiter will work in the situation you had where the throttle is the controlling input. Where the rev limiter will not help would be if you mechanically ran the engine over the redline, that would be possible if you were driving along at say 55 mph and accidentally shifted down into first or second gear. In that situation the limiter won't do anything because the PCM isn't in control. It wouldn't matter if it shut off the ignition or fuel as neither one of those could slow the engine at that point.
