All electric power steering rack has failed needs replacing. I am well experienced but it looks a nightmare to drop the sub frame and removing the rack. The sub frame is bolted to everything by looks. Or am I over looking?

I do not have access to a service manual for that vehicle, but looking at what I have found online it looks like you might be able to gain some room if you pull the entire tie rod assembly off each side, pull the exhaust, then lower the sub-frame enough to get the steering shaft apart and drop the rack out through the rear of the sub-frame.
I think you should be able to get enough room just removing the two rear subframe bolts.
