I took my car to a repair shop at least 4 separate times due to overheating. I did some research, consulted an outside mechanic and told the shop I believed it was the radiator. Every time I they said it was fixed, it was not, resulting in me being stranded on the interstate 3 times, and eventually a blown head gasket. The shop had replaced the thermostat (twice), 3 hoses, and a temperature sensor. I took it to a new shop that found a baseball-sized hole in the radiator and the blown engine.
Was the first shop negligent to the point that I deserve a refund, or even a civil suit?

In legal matters all I can do is speculate so please don’t take this as a definitive answer to your problem. As a shop, there defense will be that the hole was not there and that the thermostat was faulty and they were just repairing the obvious fault. Your best defense would be to get a written estimate and theory as to what caused your damage, by three shops. And if the reoccurring problem happened in a very short time (days, weeks) this will make your case stronger if you can prove it with paperwork. Judges want paperwork proving your case! It seems as though something was missed if this happened days apart. Good luck
