On this 2011 Scion XB, the rear caliper brackets appear to be mounted differently. The left side has no plastic spacers between the caliper bracket and the car. The right rear side has two plastic spacers between the caliper bracket and where it bolts to the car hub area. Also, the abutment clips ( 2 per side) are different looking. The left side has a certain style set of clips and the right side has another different set of two. The akebono brake pads that I bought came with 8 clips (4 of each type). Therefore, my question is: Can I get and exploded view of the rear brake assemblies left and right, and can you help me unravel the mystery between the left and right sides of the rear brakes? I have everything apart and I want to put it back properly if someone made a mistake assembling the abutment clips and brake assemblies in the past. I have never seen two different types of clips on either side of brakes and also the plastic spacers on the mounting areas from the factory. I have included photos of the left and right caliper brackets, the differences in the abutment clips, and the akebono brake pad box part number and the plastic bag with abutment clip part number. Akebono said to match the existing clips to whatever is necessary from the supplied clips. They supplied 8 clips, 4 for a 16mm rotor gap and 4 for a 15.6mm rotor gap. I am wondering what the Scion service manual and exploded view diagram says from the manufacturer of the car.

I have searched many you tube videos as well and what I can't understand is why there are plastic spacers between the caliper bracket and the mounting area on the right rear side only.

I talked to akebono customer service and they cannot suggest anything regarding the abutment clips as well. I am not the original owner and I don't know what someone did to the rear brakes while replacing them at some point. The car was working well but it was time to change the brake pads due to wear.

There are two different styles but not on each side, there will be one set for both sides. Thanks for the images they help, I would try to install one set to see if the brake pads fit and if they fit into the caliper mounting plate without connecting the brake rotor. The difference will be the width of the cup which sits in the caliper mounting bracket for the "wings" of the pad, as you can see by the diagrams below the inner pad and outer pad have different sizes. Also, you will need to reset the brake caliper before the new pads and can installed, here is an excellent video for that.

Thanks for replying. My two issues are the proper selection and placement of the abutment clips and why did someone put plastic spacers between the caliper bracket and mounting area on the rear passenger side. I went to the dealership and got the Toyota abutment clip and now I realize that each rear wheel will get a pair of abutment clips that are each uniquely shaped. Now the question is what position do I put them in on each bracket which one goes on top and which one on bottom. My pad tips are the same shape and no differences. I have attached pictures of the Toyota abutment clips and how they look on both sides. Don’t be confused there are only 4 clips in the kit, it’s just they are colored black on one side and metal on the other. I cannot just compare to what they were like when I removed them because a previous mechanic did not care about the correct placement and that is why everything is wrong. So I need to know what the service manual says about proper placement of the abutment clips orientation.

I put the left rear side together and oriented the clips by analyzing a you tube video thatvshowed the clips from a 2015 XB on the left rear side. This is how I oriented the clips. See photos. I still have to take a look at the right rear tomorrow.

Everything went back together but I still can’t figure out why the hard plastic spacers are there to be able for the caliper bracket to clear the rotor on the right rear.

Those do not look right, were they on there before? I would think they would make the caliper not align with the brake rotor. I have never seen those before and would say to remove them, your talking about the orange spacers correct? They don't look factory, were they only on one right side? Please take a look at the diagrams below to see they are not there. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

Yes the orange spacers. I know they are not originally correct. But, if I take them off the caliper bracket will not align with the rotor and I don't know why that would be unless the caliper bracket itself is not the original one.

I would guess someone changed out the bracket and added them to make it align. If it has OE rotors on it I would say to get a caliper and bracket and compare them, swap out the bracket as needed. Or measure the mounting surface to the center of the brackets on both sides and compare them. If they are the same then possibly the rear suspension on that side was replaced and were different?
