Hi,

Commonly, it is a heat shield on the exhaust system. The spot welds break allowing it to rattle. Also, it could be the internals in the catalytic converter has come loose.

Here is what to try. Take a rubber mallet and tap on the exhaust to see if you can recreate the noise. If you can, have a helper locate where it is coming from.

Now, I attached two pics below. A short while back, there was a technical service bulletin regarding a heat shield weld breaking and causing noise. The first pic shows the affected heat shield, and pic 2 shows how Nissan recommends repairing it. The pipe is under the vehicle approximately where your feet would be above in the driver's seat.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Hello,

You are right it sounds like it is in your drive-line does the noise seem to speed up as you go faster? Because there are certain drive-line noises that will come and go with vehicle speed. Does it seem like it is more in the back or middle or in the front of the vehicle. Does it get louder or lower with speed or does it stay the same. I think we can pinpoint this noise please let me know.

Thank you
Joe T.

Okay. There are heat shields in the rear as well. How would you best describe the sound. Is it a rattle, ticking, knocking and so on? Is it loud enough that you could record it with your phone and upload it for me to hear?

Let me know.

Joe

Hello,

A noise that will come and go at different speeds could be a wheel bearing, C/V joint or propeller shaft. The vehicle should be placed on a hoist or jack stands and check with a mechanics stethoscope.

Note: tire balance can cause a vibration at different speeds also and if severe enough can cause a noise also. If you can record the noise and attach it to the post we could maybe pinpoint it. I'm attaching repair guides and views of propeller shaft and drive axle below. let us know if this is helpful or if you need more info.

Thanks Ruben please keep in touch with this issue we would really like to get it resolved.
And I know where you're coming from with the weather we have a lot snow and ice here in Pennsylvania also. Really difficult to pinpoint noise with this kind of weather.

Thanks again,
Joe T.
