1997 Pontiac Grand Prix windshield Wipers

1997 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

When I cut off my wipers instead of them going to rest in the downward position they go up and stay there I have a 97 grand prix they work just fine when I use them it just when I cut them off

The only thing I can think or is the wiper transmission under the cowl is broken, or has too much play in it causing it to rotate the wrong way.
Also possible the motor connections to the transmission arm has worked loose.
