’97 Pontiac GP GTP Transmission Problem - Today while stopped at a traffic light my car would not move when the light turned green. It was as if the transmission was in neutral. I tried shifting through the gears with no response. I turned the car off and called for a tow truck. While waiting for the tow truck I restarted the car and the trans worked normally. I took off and moments later the trans started slipping again. I pulled over, turned the car off, waited a few moments and then restarted the car - the trans worked normally, but again only momentarily. This condition keeps repeating. Seems to me like an electrical malfunction or some valve sticking. Any ideas/suggestions?

Is the OD light flashing?
Sounds like a faulty sensor on the tranny. Proper diagnostic test from reputable tranny shop should run you around $50.

No lights flashing. I also should have mentioned that I checked for DTCs and there were none.

DTC usually is not thrown for some of the tranny sensors. The OD light acts as the engine light in this case, but if the OD light is not flashing then the problem may lie elsewhere. Begin by checking the transmission fluid level and adding if low or replacing if it is dark or smells burnt. Be sure to use a fluid approved for your transmission
