Why does my car stall when I hit the brakes?

I have a 91 pontiac grand am with 85,000 miles- when I drive my car over a half hour and hit the brakes, my car stalls out. I can restart it but when I put it in drive- it stalls again. I have to wait about 5 minutes and restart it for it to stay started in drive- then drive home! My dad changed the air filter- which was completely filthy- and still has to change the spark plugs. What is wrong with my car? Can anybody help me. Please.

A similar problem is the transmission torque converter lockup doesn't shift out when stopping and stalls the car. To remedy this without cost is to unplug the square 4 prong electrical plug on the front side of the transmission facing the radiator.

Just a thought. See if this helps out.
