Never use starting fluid its highly flamable and you could catch yourself on fire. Use carb spray and spraying around the wires isnt going to tell you anything. Spray around all the vacuum lines intake gasket etc if the idle goes up down or stumbles or dies you found a leak. The best way to look for a leak that will even find the small leak is to use a scan tool that shows engine live data. Watch the fuel trims while your spraying if they spike you found a leak. Also a smoke test could find a leak.

Alright have you checked the actual fuel pressure? Also are you talking about the new code is a o2 sensor code?If so what is the exact code number you have? That would be the o2 sensor in the exhaust manifold. Inspect the harness going to the o2 sensor. Also I have cars with the P0171 codes that took a smoke test to find the vacuum leak they replaced everything and finally found the vacuum leak with a smoke test. Just a thought.

I have this wonderful car.(Sometimes) well, the check engine soon light went on? Code was for cylinder 1. Changed spark plugs. Now car is making funny noise.. And yes the car overheats. Too. Finding out that's normal. But I drove it on a trip it ran fine didn't even overheat. Come back home to Redding, ca. Where its hot and it starts to act up. Go figure. Well what do you think is going on with my car. I have changed water pump, thermostat, coolant resivor and cap. Which helped for a while. NOW what? :(

Yes it does overheat. Have to add water or coolant requalarly. Not to worried about that part. The funny noise. Sound like it is coming from the alternator. Its a taping sound but its not my valves. We just changed the spark plugs. But now the service engine light is blinking. So I am not driving it. Due to reading owners manual say that could cause more problems. But after changing the plugs car now runs slugish.

Some people make there own smoke machines you can see them on you tube. The evap ones they sell that are made for that and for finding evap codes start about 700. You can always make your own smoke machine iam working on making one myself. You can also watch people doing smoke tests on you tube so you can get a idea of what iam talking about. Let me know what codes you have when you get it scanned.

I would be very concerned about the over heating.
Year and engine size would be nice.
The flashing means damage is being done to the coverter.

Was it running fine before the plugs were changed?

What did the plugs look like?

Not sure on the noise, the 3.1s sometimes have a tap to them.

Electrical problem
1999 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I just bought a 1999 Grand am Gt, and it has a few items on my laundry list of the car. Any help is much apreciated. 1. My blinker when I turn the right turn light on it blinks really fast ( blown bulb.) But I check and all the bulbs are going there dim. But going and its not in the same pattern as the left. Also after I turn it off I will still hear the clicking although its not in a set order it can be 3 fast clicks, a pause 1 click, a pause 2 clicks. Etc. 2. My abs and trac control lights are on. 3. My right break when ever I use it, it sounds like someone walking across a old wood floor. 4. Services vehicle soon, and service engine soon lights are booth on, I took it to autozone they said my gas cap. But why would that cause both of them to be on? And I don't know if im crazy or not but it seems like the service vehicle soon light only comes on in the day time and at night it does not. Please email me - Rockthistrend@hotmail. Com thank you so much, Eric.

It is a 99 grand am. With a 3400sfi engine. Yes it does overheat sometimes but I always make sure it has coolant in it. Like I said it didnt overheat once on the road trip. Before the service engine light when on it was running but it wasnt as slugish as it is now. It was not making a taping noise at all. It had a squeal that I believe was coming from the power stering pump. The code for the service engine light said cyclinder 1 misfiring.

1. Check the flasher unit if bulbs are OK.

2. You will have to get the ABS and trac. Control system scanned with a chassis scanner, looking for "C" codes.

3. Remove the rear brake caliper and inspect pads and rotor for abnormal wear.

4. Gas cap would set the service engine soon light as an EVAP code. Service vehicle soon is simply a reminder to change oil, air filter etc.

3400 motor? You should be very concerned about the overheating, these are verycommon for intake manifold gasket leaks. I have seen them kill a motor when ignored.

Check engine light:

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

While driving the car yesterday, it lost about half it's
power, check engine light came on, also low trac lght. Engine idles rough, with raw fuel smell coming from the exhaust. My question, under the engine cover is a odd looking coil pack? Maybe? Can this be tested, also can the ignition modual be tested?
