This is a new used car I will be purchasing from my neighbor. He said he had been driving it fine until one day it just killed while he was driving down the highway. He got it towed back to his place. The tow truck driver said the distributor was badly rusted so they removed that. I think the distributor might not have been giving out consistent voltage but was still able to fire the cylinders. I believe the timing chain breaking was the main problem. Since pontiac timing chains usually only make it about 50000 miles and I have reason to believe it was never replaced in the car. Now I'm not sure it broke, it's just an educated guess. Do you think the timing chain and the distributor (of course) are the only things that may need to be replaced? Or could there be more problems, and more serious problems that need to be repaired within the car.

You will need to pull the front cover and inspect the damage. The timing chain could have damaged the cam gear or crank sprocket.
The pistons may have hit the valves when the chain broke.
You will just have to check it out.
You will have to pull the heads if there is valve damage.
