My fuel guage goes back and forth between empty and full and in between constantly. I know it is a short but how do I repair the short and with what?

Chances are the "rheostat" that is attached to the float in the fuel tank is bad. It is a simple resister that only allows so much power to go to the gauge based on how high or low the fuel in the tank is.
