Recently the "service engine soon" light came on as I was driving home. I pulled over to the side of the road, turned the engine off and then re-started the car and the light was off. Everything seems to be running fine, I don't notice any sluggish performance from the engine and it idles okay. I tried some gas treatment thinking their might be some moisture in the tank that triggered the light to come on, but it still didn't work. Any suggestions? This has been going on for the last two weeks.

Service engine lights are set for over a hundred different faults and serve as a warning to have it checked out, just like you are doing.

We need to know which codes are being set by your vehicles computer. There are two ways to find this. Because your vehicle is a pre OBD system a GM style connector is needed to read your codes, which AutoZone can't do. Call around and see if any shops will perform a free code check for you and give you the number and description.

Otherwise there is a manual method to retrieve the codes that takes a little practice to read.

BTW, a paperclip will substitute for the key they are talking about.

Once you have the information, post back and we'll keep going.
