I replaced the thermostat, radiator censor, and fan relays for hot and cold radiator fans.I may have over filled the transmission fluid before all this? Could that have caused the problem? I was told it could be either the water pump, or a blown head gasket. It's fine running idle but as soon as I drive it a few blocks it over heats. I only paid a 1000 dollars for the car. Is it worth trying to get it fixed? I don't know if I should replace the water pump or not?

Easy way to check for water pump operation is to remove the heater core inlet hose and crank the car to see if coolant is pushed out. If it does water pump is fine. If so then you can get a exhaust leak checker kit for checking if exhaust fumes are being forced out into coolant system. Usually does not cost more than $35. Follow directions on kit exactly. If a blown head gasket is present, repair can be more cost and aggravation than what car is worth.
