Car starts and then quits after a couple seconds

86 olds cutlass cruiser wagon, tech 4 engine, will start and then quits after a second or two. If starter fluid is sprayed into throttle body it will continue to run, if gas pedal is pressed down while spraying in starter fluid fire will come out of various areas around throttle body or carberator, or whatever that thing is. This is one of those early fuel injection models. Thanks so much, this is the first time I have used your service, I am concerned about the payment process. I do have a paypal acct through ebay, so I can use that to tip you, but I would like to see how this whole process works first, thanks so much, have a great weekend. Tim

It almost sounds like your not getting enough fuel, do you have access to a fuel pressure gage?

Thanks for your response: no, I do not have a fuel pressure gauge, nor the competence to use one. I can see fuel spraying into the throttle body or injector system, which looks kind of like a carbeurator.

Im sure you could do it if you had one, dont cut yourself short, you spraying starting fluid in and the car running is a goos indication or either a fuel pump pressure problem and or a fuel pressure regulator, if you have to take it somewhere at least you have some idea
thanks

Thanks for the kind words and advice, Jim. One thing I forgot to mention is that when the problem first occured I had started the car, put it in gear and after moving a few feet it abrubtly stopped. I believed at the time that I had ice in the fuel line, but we have had a couple of 40 degree days in Fargo, and still it won't stay running for more than a couple seconds. Thanks again, Tim
