1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass starting problems

When I go to start my car, it will fire up. Then after a few seconds. The idle will drop and then choke out. Causing the engine to shake very hard. Other times it will start up just fine. The idle will continue to work. Then, when I put the car in gear, it will once again drop in rpm's and choke out. What could this be?

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked fuel pump pressure? Have you checked for vacuum leaks?
