1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic a lot miles

I know close to nothing about cars short of how to drive one. If I had the money I'd simply take it in to get it fixed but I simply do not.

Here is what happened. I was driving down the road, and all of a sudden my gas pedal failed to work. The car was still running however when I tried to give it gas I just wouldnt speed up. After realizing something was wrong and turning my hazards on I looked for the closes place to pull my car into. As soon as I tried turning into a parking lot I noticed it had become increasingly difficult to turn the car, same is said to use the brake.

after doing a bit of research I had only found one other person with a similar problem but had not found out if or how they solved their issue.

people with similar stories seem to be able to start their car where as I can not. It wont turn over, and some times when I try to do so something makes a popping sound some where.

I've asked people and they say stuff like " check the belt or the fluids " or something like that. The only belt I know of is the one keeping my pants on.

like I said. I know nothing about cars but do not have the money to take it in.

this book I have isnt helping much either because it throws all these fancy car terms at me and I dont have the faintest clue what it means.

some help please?

Lets start by opening the hood and looking at the front of the engine. Is the belt still there that goes around to all of the pulleys on the engine front? If not, you need to spin all pulleys by hand to see which one caused the problem

I had a friend who is always working on his truck look at it for a bit. He said its not a fuel issue, and that the electrical should be ok. However when ever I try to start the car the engine pops and smokes shoots out from some undetermined place near the engine. I get spark from the spark plugs so we've determined thats not the issue either. My friend tested the fuel line so like I said my friend told me thats not a problem. What else could there be?

The smoke and the popping sound seems to be a whole new issue all together.

Need to do a compression test to see if the timing chain is intact before we try anything else, due to the fact it pops and smokes. see video on how to do this
