The port accepts an OBD1 style connector but reads nothing. Is it possible that in 1997 they have OBD2 but fit with an OBD style port?

Welcome to 2CarPros. 1997 should be an OBD II. Any car sold in the US after 1996 had to be OBD II. The connector is on the passenger side next to the glove compartment. Could you take a picture of the connector and post it?
