A/C causes loud noise

Air Conditioning problem 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 107000 miles

My question is regarding my air conditioning. When the AC is on, there is a loud rattling or rumbling noise that constantly occurs. This noise slightly diminishes the longer the car is run but it never fully goes away. The noise is much worse immediately after the car is cranked and the air is turned on. The noise completely goes away whenever the ac is turned off, however. That is what told me that it must be something to do with the AC. Can you help me know what might be causing this problem? Thank you!

The car still cools well. I looked at the compressor and nothing seemed to be loose. I did notice that the engine belt seems to wabble around a lot only when the ac is on. When the ac is off, the belt moves very smoothly.

Kevorivers,

My 2003 Nissan Altima has the same problem. I recently had the serpentine belt and tensioner replaced and the noise stopped for about a week. Now, everytime I turn on the A/C there is a noise and the car shakes- but as soon as you turn off the A/C- silence. Did you have any luck fixing the problem?

On my 2002 3.5 Nissan Altima I have a very loud rattling noise when I turn on the AC and when I rev the engine it only gets louder. Also, the AC doesn't cool as good it usually takes about 15 minutes into my drive and not even very cool. Once I turn off the AC the noise goes away.
