Car Won't Crank

1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse, 140,000 miles.
AAMCO Rebuilt transmission a couple of years ago.

After the car sits for 2 days or more, it sometimes
will not crank when the key is turned to the
start position. If you wait awhile, like several minutes to several hours, it will crank and start. Sometimes it will go a week or more without acting up and then it will refuse to crank for a short time. All the accessories come on when the ignition switch is on but when it acts up, there is no sound when turning the switch to the start position such as would be heard if a solenoid or relay is engaging. What would be the most likely cause or what can I do to narrow it down.
Thanks,
Mark

Have you checked the connections at the battery and the oposite ends of the cables for tightness and being clean?

No. I assumed, (there's that bad word again) that
connections were OK since everything else comes on- heater blower headlights etc. I'll check it out.
Thanks.

That may very well not be the source, but the connection problems can do funny things. If good, we'll go from there.
