I have a 93 mitsubishi eclipse, 1.8 liter engine, and 158,000 miles on it. My alternator belt has slipped or snapped several times now. It usually happens within 3 weeks of putting it on. I have taken it to good mechanic who I have always trusted. But he doesnt even know why it happens. He says he had mitsubishi that he had to bring in every 2 weeks to tighten the belts. What could be causing the belt to slip? Also what can I do about it? Ill take even temporary suggestions here. I only need this car for a few more years. Thank you.

Have your technician check the lower bolt on the altenator were it goes threw the aluminum oil pump assembly. I have seen these bolts wear out the oil pump assebly were this bolt goes throu. Then what happens is the altenator is no longer straight with the belt and it walks and makes noise and damges it in the process. You can usually look at the alignment of the altenator in reference to the belt and see an alignment issue, but sometimes u cant see it it will only torque under a load while driving. Good luck
