1993 Mitsubishi Diamante why wont my car run?

When you start the car it will run and idle, but as soon as you put in into gear the car dies. Why is this?

Sounds like your torque converter is locking up when put into gear, can you get more rpm then an idle when in park? Does it also die when you go into reverse also?
