Electrical problem
1998 Mercury Tracer 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 108000 miles

My parents own a 1998 Tracer with 108000 miles. The car starts and runs fine until you press the brake in order to shift gears. The car starts to die and if you left off the brake, the car resumes running fine.

Is this due to a ground fault somewhere or what?

It sounds like a vacuum problem. Check the vacuum hose to the brake booster and the brake booster itself to see if it will hold vacuum.

Let me know what you find.
