Overheating?

1989 Sable 3.0 150K miles -- the engine is overheating. The cooling fan is working, the water pump is circulating. Five or six minutes after starting the needle on the temp gauge will rise to normal, but after hovering there for a minute or two, the needle will start to steadily rise. Could the thermostat be stuck open or partially open?

Could a bad heater core be the problem? The heater throws anti-freeze odor into the car when I run the heater.

The heater core leaking will make it low, causing it to run hot, but alone the core wont make it overheat. That is a large undertaking to replace the heater core in that car
