2002 Mercury Sable Engine Stalling

2002 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Automatic 37000 miles

My 2002 Mercury, Sable (Vulcan engine) began stalling out without warning the other day. It will crank and idle (roughly at times) but stalls out, sputters and eventually quits when putting it in gear or touching the accelerator. It will not crank a second time until completely turning off the ignition switch. After a few minutes of idling, I managed to get it to coast in gear without quitting (still quitting at the touch of accelerator). The check engine light has been on since I had it a few months ago, but it has run perfectly up until this point w/ only 37000 miles. The mechanic's diag would not give any readings (wasn't getting a charge to the comp), so they replaced the alternator. No help. They say they think the computer/PCM is bad. Does this sound right? Would it even crank with a bad comp?

Ok first things first why is the engine light on. Do you have the p number? Give me the code it will be a P and 4 numbers and I will look up the code and we will go from there.

The shop I took it to was unable to get any codes. They claimed that nothing was registering.

If the engine light is on then it stored a code. I would call around to some parts stores and find one that does a free scan and have it scanned again and write down the codes. Make sure they have an OBD2 scanner. Let me know what you get ok.
