I have a 1999 mercury sable gs and it runs perfectly but it seems like the temp gauge stays on cold no matter how long I have been driving it and the heater heats but never gets really hot like any other car I have had, I just bought it a couple days ago and now the service engine soon light is on? Can these two be related and what things should be checked?

For a start replace the thermostat and test the engine coolant temperature sensor/temperature switch
