1994 Mercury Sable major oil leak

Since Saturday (today is Wednesday), my car has gone through 1 1/2 gallons of oil! I put 3 quarts in on Saturday and never really went anywhere very far.
Today I drove about 25 miles, and the oil light went on. I pulled in a gas station and checked the oil to find that the dipstick came out almost clean! I added two quarts, and the light went out. I drove 12 miles back and everything was fine. The car sat for about 4 hours, and then I drove 5 miles and the light went on again, same story.

What is the cause and how much should it cost to repair?

Hi there,

How much of this is external leaking? If it is burning the this amount you must be driving in a permanent blue haze, for that much oil to be burnt it could only be pistons & rings, and external leakage of that magnitude could be a torn rear main seal, cracked pressure sender may be, how much is drooping on the road?
