Engine starts but dies

2000 Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6L with 70k miles that starts but dies unless you keep pressure on accelerator while cold. After it warms up, the idle is very low and sometimes dies. The idle is so low, the alternator show discharging. To keep it running and charging, I have to apply accelerator and ride brake.

That sounds like the "TPS" Throttle Position Sensor is not functioning. The Throttle Position Sensor is what sets your idle after you start your car. It's located on the upper portion of the Throttle Body and has a plug connected to it. It's simple to replace and costs around $50.00 bucks.
