When I start my car you hear a loud scratching sound. My father n law says it is the air conditioner clutch. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hello,

When you hear a screeching sound at startup it is typically due to a faulty serpentine belt.
It is likely is worn and glazed over. So at startup the belt will actually slip on the pulleys and that will make the squealing / screeching noise.

Here is a helpful guide that goes over this issue:

If the belt is worn then it will have to be replaced.

I have attached the belt replacement diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
