I have the vehicle listed above CRDi. Mechanics trying to steal or fix?

We had a breakdown with a rocker that came off. Then the vehicle was fixed, the rocker was just put back and we could do another couple of thousand km's. The same rocker came off again. This time another mechanic said we should replace the rockers, and we did. After replacing all the rockers, the car didn't want to start at all. Then they told me it is the fuel rail pickup, the pressure relief valve that needs to be replaced. This was done and still it does not want to start, so now they tell me the diesel pressure pump next to the top has to be replaced. But these parts had no problems when we had the breakdown. How can extra parts break when the car was standing? Or is this dude trying to make more money out of me?

Hi,

Like you, I don't feel they would fail while sitting. There is a chance he isn't sure what is happening and is trying different things.

I have a question. When you crank the engine, does it sound the same as always? I believe the rockers are adjustable. (The diesel model isn't offered in the US, so I don't have the specifics). If they are too tight, there will be a loss of engine compression preventing it to start. If they are too loose, they may not be opening the valves far enough.

If they are too tight, the engine will sound odd when cranking. It will turn faster and sound very steady without interruption from compression. If they are too loose, they will have compression, but you should hear a metallic sound from under the valve cover.

Let me know if you have heard the engine cranking.

Take care,

Joe

Thank you for your reply. I have heard it crank, but it sounds normal to me. The mechanic says that there is diesel up to the injectors, but nothing goes through the injectors. The car was fine, it literally dropped a rocker on my way out my yard, I cut the engine and had them come out. The car started perfectly and drove like a dream, but now they come with part after part. I personally think that they are missing something. I will give him your opinion and see what he says. Thank you so much.

Hi,

You are welcome. If possible, could you update me on what is found? Since it is a diesel, I can't look up specifics. But I would think they are adjustable. Also, if there is diesel in the injectors, what is preventing it from starting? If you hit it with starting fluid, does it start for a couple of seconds?

Let me know.

Joe

Apparently, no diesel is going through the injectors. Thats why the mechanic says the pressure pump has gone. But it was working fine until the rocker came off. Now I don't understand how the pressure pump would fail in the time they fixed the rockers and lifter, and the pressure relief regulator control. Just does not add up to me.

Hi,

What he is telling you can certainly cause it not to run. When you think about things, one would feel it would be unlikely this scenario wouldn't have happened, but anything is possible.

If he is willing to guarantee that is the issue, let him do the repairs with the understanding that the old parts are to be replaced at no cost to you if the problem isn't resolved.

If he doesn't want to do it, personally, I would get a second opinion, but that is your call.

Let me know how things turn out for you.

Take care,

joe
