Finally got codes on the car. There is a C1277 code, bad steering angle sensor. It is a little unclear whether replacing the sensor would fix the problem with the power steering.

I am using FORScan for obtaining the codes, there is no response on the EPS system in FORScan.

I am fine replacing the sensor, and have a spare electric pump assembly, but not sure how best to proceed.

I guess my question is whether the steering angle sensor would cause the power steering to not work. The code comes from the ABS system.

One more thing: if the power steering pump is broken, would I see some kind of code in the main computer systems for the fact that the pump is not functional?

I think you are touching on all the issues. The code is not likely to cause the power steering to work because you have a mechanical system and is not electronic.

So, we should address this code which I am attaching the info below.

Here is a guide that will help with this type of testing:

As for the power steering issue that is likely a failed pump which is most likely the shaft is broken which is common on these Mazda and Ford engines.

I would remove the belt and see if the pulley is loose.

Please run through this info and let us know what you find.

Thanks
