I have a 1998 Mazda Protege LX, 1.5 L engine, 133000 mile. The check engine light came on and we were told the EGR valve and catalytic converter were going bad. Can the EGR valve be cleaned instead of buying one for nearly 500$?

There is a good chance that you EGR valve is ok. What may have happened is the egr port to the egr boost sensor is clogged with carbon, this is usually fixxed by having your intake taken off and having all the egr ports cleaned out. NOTE! These ports cannot and will not be cleaned out by any 'intake' cleaners in a can. Sorry but thems the brakes.
