My Mazda Protege5 has gone from rough idle while stopped to pretty much dying when stopped. I want to clean the EGR Valve and I know HOW to do it, I just can't figure out how to GET to it! I've found photos of other cars where it's very accessible, but mine is buried - the bolts are in a very awkward position. Is there a trick to this?

While looking around just now, I hear a hissing sound so I guess I have a vacuum leak too. I know this is a loaded question, but what would someone with few tools/equipment do to try to find the leak. I know the general area by the sound, but can't pinpoint it.

Are you getting a check engine light indicating an EGR code?

My best advice is to buy a Haynes manual for >$20. It will pay for itself during the first repair. It will also give you information on a variety of repairs and maint.

It will also tell you if there are special tools needed, in which case you may want to take it to a shop rather than buy a special tool that may cost big $$$.

As far as the vacuum leak, if you know someone who smokes, put the car in the garage and blow some smoke in the the area you suspect the leak, if you see it sucked into the engine, it will give you an idea of where the leak is.
