I have a 2000 Mazda Protege ES 1.8L and I'm getting pretty strong gas fumes, but I can't seem to find any leaks. The fumes come and go, and there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Sometimes, you can't smell a thing. Other times you have to keep the windows shut and the air on recirculate so you don't get a headache.

The source seems to be somewhere the engine compartment. I traced the gas line into the engine compartment and followed it all the way to the fuel rail, but no visual leaks. I've tried sniffing around to find the source of the fumes, but with all of the air movement it's almost impossible.

Could it be something with the EGR or possibly a bad vapor canister? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

I'll take a look and see. That could be it.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll post what I find out.

Ok, I figured it out this time. One of the plugs started to back out. I didn't notice it the first time I looked, but it backed out far enough to push the boot up a little, so I was able to notice it this time.

I was a little tentative when I installed the new plugs, since I'm always afraid to strip the aluminum head. Obviously, it wasn't quite tight enough.

Glad this is finally fixed.

Thanks,
Rob
