Q: I ran out of gas the other day in the middle of nowhere and it was very very cold outside. Stranded on the side of the road and having forgotten my jacket, I left the ignition and power in the car on and also left the heater on. The heater seemed to blow hot hair for a little while, then it stopped blowing hot air. Is this normal, or did I screw up my heater by leaving it running without the car actually running? Thanks.

Go ahead and check the thermostat and if that don't work-you might want to check a vacuum hose or cable that is attached to an air intake door motor etc.

My question is, does the engine have to be running for the heater to work?
