I can drive my car on a flat service but the engine just rev's when I try to climb up any little or larger uphill grade.

If it were a transmission problem, would I be able to move at all?

Do the RPMS go up excessively with no corresponding speed increase. If so sounnds like trans is slipping.

Yes. That's correct, the RPM increases but with no increase in speed. Does a slipping transmission usually mean its time for a new or rebuilt transmission?

If so, I can't see that the car would be worth it.

Thank you.

You could try fluid and filter change when fluid gets old it looses adhesion to clutches. If fluid comes out dark and has a earthy burnt smell that indicates clutch pack damage and rebuild maybe necessary.
