Idle issue: idles too low, causes car to not stay started, shuts off when putting it into any gear or at stops unless I drive with both feet to keep it running.

I've changed out the idle air control valve and the throttle position sensor (disconnected battery when changing both parts to reset cars CPU), tune up, oil change, new starter, new complete A/C system.

A mechanic last year adjusted the throttle before because it had low idle issue, whatever he did lasted until a few weeks ago. I replaced the plug wires because I had one touch some hot that caused a misfire. Fixed that and soon after the low idle issue re-occurred.

I'm at a loss as what to do about it except shorten the length of the throttle springs to make it idle correctly unless there's a vacuum leak and I know nothing about vacuum issues. Please help.

Hi,

It could be related to a vacuum leak. Actually, that is where I would start. If you look through this link, it explains how to locate and repair a leak. Take a look through it and let me know if you are comfortable performing it.

As far as the idle speed is concerned, it is electronically controlled. I'm not sure how it would have been adjusted. The PCM controls the IAC. I guess he may have adjusted the pintel. Have you removed the IAC and made sure there is no carbon build-up in the intake where it mounts that could be restricting airflow? IF you haven't checked, you may want to try servicing it to see if that helps. Here is a link that explains how it's done.

The IAC is located on the throttle body and held on with two bolts. See pic below.

Let me know.
