I can no longer shift unless someone were to get underneath my car and manually put it into gear. Can someone tell me how to hook up the cables and where they are located so that I can have my boyfriend fix it? He only made it so far through college for automotive whatever and needs a little bit of help. If we could get a diagram or directions, that'd be great. Thanks!

Is the shifter NOT moving when brake pedal is pressed? Or shifter moves but nothing happens? And have Joe college check to see if the brake lights are working?

The break lights are working. The shifter does nothing.A few different people tell me that it just needs to be linked up? The shifter moves but nothing happens. It moves with the slightest touch of my finger all the way back and forth. When the brake pedal is pressed.

This probably means the cable snapped, broke inside the cable guide and you need a new cable. After you install the new cable, adjust this way, your tranny is the AOD(automatic overdrive). AOD, AXOD-E & A4LD Position transmission shift lever in overdrive position. Hold shift lever against rear overdrive stop with a constant force of about 3 lbs. Loosen shift control cable (shift rod on A4LD transmission) retaining nut at transmission. Ensure transmission/transaxle manual lever is in overdrive position. 1. On AOD and A4LD, overdrive is third detent from full counterclockwise position. On AXOD- E, overdrive is second detent from most rearward position. Tighten retaining nut to 10-18 ft. Lbs. (13-25 N.M). Check transmission operation in each position. Ensure neutral start switch and back-up lights operate properly. 2.
The replacement of the cable itself requires some dimantling of the dash, and lowering the steering column to accsess the cable. If you are going to attempt it, disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes to dissable the air bag system! Leave it disconnected until the repair is finished and column is back in place.
