Everytime I step on the brakes the lights initially come on but then go out until I push the pedal all the way to the floor. The car also doesn't want to shift out of park unless I really push the brake pedal as far down as it can go. I'm worried I am going to get rear ended if this keeps on. Thanks for any help !

Hi:
The brake light switch is located under the dash on the pedal lever. It sounds like it's out of adjustment or it is bad. That is where I would start.

Also, you mentioned the pedal goes to the floor. Is that correct?

There are times when it stays firm but other times it goes to the floor. It isn't real spongy but it seems to require more force to engage the car out of park. I use this car to deliver mail so I am constantly on the brakes.

TWO CONCERNS:

1- The brake light switch actuates the park lock solenoid. Therefore, if the brake lights arn't coming on because of the switch, you won't get it out of park. Replace the switch or have it checked for replacement.

2- The fact that the pedal goes to the floor indicates to me there is another problem with the brakes. To me my first guess would be the master cylender is going bad. Check around on the ground and behind each wheel for leaks. Also, make sure the rubber brake hoses are not expanding when the brakes are applied.

Let me know if you have other questions.
