What could the engine check light mean when it comes on and how muchshould I expect to pay to have the computer check it out?

The indicates some malfunction in your emission control settings. Possibly an o2 sensor, engine running too lean or rich or even only a loose gas cap. Most auto supply stores will read the computer code that caused the light to come on for no charge. I some states they will also turn the light off for you if allowed by law. If the problem is not corrected however the light will come back on.
