My car is leaking coolant from where it goes from the top radiator hose into the motor. Is there some kind of seal there I can't see? Because past owner has some kind of weld stuff on it so I have to remove all that so I can do anything. But is there a gasket and o-ring or something there that would cause it to leak? Please help.

Hi,

The upper hose attaches to the thermostat housing. See pic 1 below. And yes, there is a gasket. However, if there is a repair that looks like jb weld or other product, it sounds like there was a crack in the housing,

Do me a favor. Take a pic of it so I can see what you are dealing with and upload it for me to see.

If you can't, try to remove the "weld" product. I can't be sure, but chances are it's there to repair a crack or damage to the housing.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care and God Bless,

Joe

Thank you and in the morning I will try to take a picture of it. But on the Chevrolet Tracker the thermostat is on the lower hose on the radiator because I just changed the water pump and the thermostat not long ago. The upper hose is attached to a it looks like a hose but it's metal and it runs across the top of the engine and down into the back. But because of the welding I can't see exactly where it's going. Tomorrow I will take a picture of it. I'm going to try to get some of that welding whatever it is off. I will post a picture of what I'm referring to. Thank you very much for getting back to me. Maybe with a picture you can tell me what I'm working with.

Joe, this is a picture of what I was referring to. I haven't gotten any of that swelled off of it yet, but this is what it looks like right now and where I'm talking about. Please get back to me if you know anything about this or what I can do to stop the leak there. Please

Hi,

It looks like something melted. If that is something like JB Weld, I can't imagine it is repairable. Try to remove some of that. It may be difficult.

I have to be honest with you. I have a feeling the best thing to do would be to replace the thermostat housing. That is your call at this point. If that is all a "cold weld" product, it had to be seriously damaged.

Try to get that off. As I said, it may be really difficult. If it is, remove the housing and replace it. However, make sure you can find one first. You may have to get one from a salvage yard. I don't know if this one is made aftermarket.

Here are the directions. The pics attached below correlate with the directions.

Okay, it could be a hose or a loose clamp.

The best way to check is to pressure test the system and look for the leak. That will narrow it down. You can rent a tester at a parts store.
