Engine Mechanical problem
2005 Kia Sportage 6 cyl 81000 miles

My 2005 kia will die when coming to a stop. It doesn't always happen but I noticed its becoming more frequent. Also, every now and then the engine will make noise like it's trying to shift down. It doesn't happen often but my car is just acting crazy! 02 sensor needs to be changed. Would this cause this problem?

Hi boojie,

Yes, a faulty O2 snsor can cause engine stalling at idle.
Did you try to retrieve for trouble codes?
What is the idling speed?

I'm not certain what idle speed is. I will make note the next time it happens. I went to auto zone and the 02 sensor code is the only one that came up. I'm surprised the 02 sensor can cause that since my mechanic was quick to point out that it wouldn't create that type of problem. He said I would only notice a slight variance in my gas mileage. When I had an oil change at the dealer where I bought the car. The 02 sensor was the only code to show up. Of course it's not covered under my warranty and they also said I could continue driving my car with no worries. They acted like it wasn't a big deal! I might add that I am a female and very ignorant about cars.

The O2 sensor is not directly responsible for the staling. When it fails, the computer would use backup for the circuit and if the engine tuning is not correct, this condition can cause the engine to run lean or rich resulting in stalling when slowin down.

For the idling speed, what is it showing under noral operating conditions with engine warmed up?
Do you have any other performance or engine issues?
Does the engine seem to dropo before catching u when the A/C is turned on?
