Air Conditioning problem
2006 Kia Spectra Front Wheel Drive Manual 48,000 miles

We have an intermittent situation where the A/C airflow stops flowing. Little flakes of ice will start blowing out of the ducting prier to total airflow stopping. This has happened once with the defroster when in minus 10 weather. What can be causing this. Could this be a faulty temperature actuator or evaporator sensor. We have the car at the Kia dealer and they won't do anything due to not being able to reproduce the situation.

Please! Need some help here.

Hi donc45,

Thank you for the donation.

When the air flow stopped, do you hear the motor running or the motor stopped as well?

You can hear the motor running. Just before it stops blowing air, there will be tiny ice flakes blown out of the ducts. If you turn the ac off for 20 30 minutes then turn it back on, it works for a an hour or two. It is as if something is freezing and not letting air through. This is under warranty and at the dealer, however thy refuse too do anything because thy can not duplicate the situation.

The evaporator is frosting and when this occurs, air flow would be restricted. You need to check the temperature setting, avoid maximum coldness.

Hi, Ive had the same issue with my spectra, It started off doing the same thing, it would freeze up and stop blowing air but the system still working. Then after shutting it off and starting the a/c again it would start blowing, It went like that for a few months. I had junk stuck in the blower motor, I cleaned it, but it kept doing the same, as if it was freezing up inside (evaporator- maybe). The mechanics at KIA could not do anything for me since like yours they cannot recreate the problem, eventually my a/c stopped working. The problem is that the compressor does not get power when ON is selected, the fan just blow hot air now, the mechanics checked all the system and they can jump the compressor and get it to work but they cannot find the electrical issue, Im taking again to another KIA dealership, I think is the evaporator thermostat, also known as thermocon but we will see, I hope you can your solved cuz mine stinks. Keep me posted if you find the problem.
Good luck.
KieroTakoBell.
