The car has the name Kia Morning, but it is the same as Kia Picanto.

At approximately 30 MPH (45kph) when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear the car engine will over rev for approximately one second (transmission flare) then return to normal RPM when the shift is complete. When the shift to 3rd has taken place if I do not increase the car's speed the transmission it will down shift again back and forth between 3rd to 2nd then back up to 3rd.

If I maintain a constant speed of 40 MPH (60kph) and no load (flat road, no incline) the transmission will sometimes shift down momentarily then immediately shift back.

The car will predictably do the 2nd to 3rd flare but occasionally also when changing from 1st to 2nd.

I live in a constantly hot climate, so a cold temperature is not a factor.
Once in 3rd gear the car drives very well.

I have had this issue for many months.
The fluid was changed 3 months ago. Kia needs a special fluid type which is not available in my country so Valvoline Maxlife (which is Kia compatible) was used but it made no improvement.

The transmission fluid level is constantly checked usually after returning from driving the car.
The transmission has no leaks.

When the problem started a transmission code reader monitored the car while driving. The flare occurred repeatedly but no codes were set, and none were initially found.

When the fluid was changed the pan and filter were removed and cleaned. The attached pics are of the solenoids.

If replacing solenoids is considered necessary, then I need a recommendation for a reliable supplier that will ship with an online order. Solenoids are not available from parts suppliers locally.

I have seen the turbine shaft speed sensor go bad and not leave a code. Here is the location for the sensor so you can check it out. Check out the images (below). Please let us know how it goes.

Hi Ken, Thank you for your prompt reply.

You suggest replacing the Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor.
Does the gear shifting behavior that I describe match the symptoms of a failing TSS sensor?

I ask because I do not have access to car parts stores that you enjoy in the USA. Parts usually have to be ordered online from more developed countries.

Do you have a part number etc, that I would need to order this part?

I cannot see the sensor, I need to remove the air filter box/duct, battery support, coolant water hose etc, to gain access. If I have difficulty identifying it, I will send pics.

Thank you.

Hello Ken,

I can confirm the part is not available here. It's a Hyundai part and I now have the part number.

If you can let me know if the sensor can be tested for failure and how to do it. That would really help before I order online.

Should the sensor not fix the issue what else could it be?

Thanks.

Hi Ken,

In heavy rain I got the sensor out, pic attached.

Can you tell me if this sensor can be tested and how to do before I try and find one overseas online?

Thanks.

Sure, though it is not a 100% test use a voltmeter on OMHs and attach them to the terminals. It should be about 0.2 OHMs if the sensor is good, if it is over 1.0 ohms replace the sensor.
