So my daughters car started overheating today. No coolant in the reservoir. I felt the radiator and it was cool so I figured thermostat. Just replaced the thermostat after it sitting for three hours. I topped off the coolant and started the car within three minutes of it just idling the temperature gauge maxed out and the red light came on. I went and checked the radiator and it was not hot. Turned on the heat and it was cool air coming out. I am thinking the temperature sensor? Any thoughts?

It sounds like the water pump impeller has fallen off. But to be sure before you take it apart remove the thermostat and refill will water then while the engine cold remove the upper hose and start the engine you should see flow. If not the water pump would be my bet. Here is a guide that can help:

Please run this test and get back to us.
