Steering problem
1977 Jeep CJ7 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive

I have about 4 inches of play in the steering wheel. The lower coupler boot is tourn up. Will replacing the lower coupler assembly fix the problem? If so, do I have to remove the steering shaft from the gear box or is there an easier way?

Normally I would not answer this as it is steering and novices shouldn't mess around with that type of thing. But if the coulpler is torn up as you say it may well be the problem. All you need do is unbolt it from the bottom at the box and unbolt it fro m the top. Pull the bolts right out and slide it one way to disconnect and pull it off. Reinstall the same way. It may or may not take care ofthe problem. You coul dhave someone else turn the steering wheel back and forth and you watch to see if that is the major problem. It won't move as much down there If you do replace it and it doesn't fix it take it to a pro.
