Hello I have a 97' jeep grand cherokee laredo 4.0L with 118,000. I hear a sqeal/whine during initial acceleration then it stops. If I'm in park and rev the motor it doesn't do it. Also when I turn off the engine it makes this same noise briefly.

Please help

Check for a weak sepentine belt tensioner or a glazed/worn belt for starters.

I already checked the belts, it sounds like it's coming from the center of the vehicle inside the car like a metal on metal sound.

Sounds like a transmission. There may be a blockage in the torque converter drain back check valve restricting flow, and overheating the transmission.

I would check the dipstick and see if there any metal particles. I would also check the temperature of the transmission. May be valve troubles?

But first and foremost get the codes checked in the computer and get back with them.

I had this problem and it was coming from the Driveshaft area. What I did was I put it on a hoist and sprayed some oil while the wheel was rotating and it took the noise away instantly.

It was because somehow dirt got into the seal and was making the noise. Once it got cleaned the noise was gone.
